Writing 3. Liberty Enlightening the World, better known as the Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous monuments worldwide. It's located in New York, United States; more specifically located on Liberty Island, south of the island of Manhattan, near the mouth of the Hudson River. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French to the U.S. in 1886 to commemorate the centennial of the Declaration of Independence of the United States and as a sign of friendship between the two nations. The statue is the work of French sculptor Fréderic Auguste Bartholdi and the internal structure was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel. The French architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, was responsible for the choice of copper used for the construction of the statue. After Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi prefabricated the figure in Paris in the sheets molded over a stainless steel frame, was shipped to the United States in 241 boxes in 1885. The sculptor intended his work was a huge and impressive symbol of human freedom. It was probably for the millions of immigrants who came to America in the nineteenth century seeking freedom and fulfillment of their dreams. Due to the high size of the statue and its weight, design engineers Eugène Emmanuel Viollet le Duc and Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was brought to the project to design the infrastructure of four gigantic steel supports and monitor assembly. In 1875, they started the structure of copper and steel in France. Ten years later, in 1885, the 46-meter height of the statue was completed; it weighed 225 tons to its completion. In 1885 was the year that the famous American architect Richard Morris Hunt designed the pedestal of the statue and oversaw its construction within the walls of Fort Wood Bedloe Island in New York Harbor. In my opinion, the Statue of Liberty is a great architectural work. Not only for its extraordinary design and what it means for the world but also the skills its designers had to be able to create such a large structure with the materials they used. In addition using their ability as engineers they achieved the maintanaince of the structure.
